United Kingdom. The police find the actress, Diana Baring, near the
body of her friend. All the circumstantial evidence seems to point to
her and, at the end of the trial, she is condemned. Sir John Menier,
a jury member, suspects Diana's boyfriend, who works as an acrobat
wearing a dress.
Trivia:
This movie was made twice by Hitchcock at the same time, this version
in English, and the German version called
Mary.
Many scenes were used in both versions.
This is the first film in which a person's thoughts are heard on the
soundtrack, occurring at 0:09:28.
This is the fourth of 40 films in which Alfred Hitchcock makes a cameo
appearance. At 1:02:48, for 4 seconds, he walks with a female companion
past the house where the murder takes place, while Sir John and Markham
chat in the background.
At 1:35:03, and for the next 80 seconds, a clown and another man are seen
holding juggling clubs. This is shown again a second time. The next
3 times this occurs, the
clubs can be seen being juggled
in the background, but the juggler doing it is obscured behind other
people.
